There are basically two types of chemical bonds, ionic and covalent. Ionic bonds occur between metals and nonmetals. They are called ionic because they result in the creation of ions, positively or negatively charged particles. Ionic bonds transfer electrons from one element to another. Covalent, on the other hand, result in the production of molecules and occur primarily between nonmetals.
